Sketch-A-Day #005
Hahaha…This was all I could do after a 16 hour day that included a 4 hour long PowerPoint presentation and a trip to Philly and back.

I take a figure drawing class on Monday nights at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. Here are three of the drawings I did tonight.
One might think that because I’m a graduate of CCAD that I’d be good at figure drawing. Well, I was a naive AD/GRAPH major who didn’t enjoy drawing the figure, so I only took the two required classes.
Now its time to learn!

Sorry for the terrible lighting and photography.
A friend of mine, Thom Glick, started an exercise/challenge called Sketch-A-Day and asked if I wanted to participate. The thought of it still makes me nervous, but in the end, I thought why not. Something like this will only help me achieve my goal of becoming a better illustrator in 2009.
So, Here is my first sketch. It started out as a life drawing of my obese cat, but she doesn’t like to be still when you need her to. So instead of started over, I just continued drawing in a stylized fashion as she continued to roll around.

Check out the other illustrators that are participating in the Sketch-A-Day exercise. There is a list of participants in the side column of Thom’s blog.
A half a year later and I have finally taken the time to download all of the photos I have been collecting on my camera. I just wanted to complete the black birds post with a photo of the topper in use.

For those of you who know me, you know I’m usually not satisfied by a cookie-cutter, out of the box solution for anything. Well, it runs in the family. These photos are of a wedding cake topper my cousin asked me to create for her wedding.
I’m not a sculptor by any means. I mainly use my hands to guide the mouse on a computer, but I thought this would be a great challenge to take on. So I got some foil and some Sculpey and began experimenting. Every part of this piece is Sculpey (wrapped around foil); the reds, the black and the white are all clay. I used a high-gloss lacquer to finish it off.
I’m pretty happy with the results, and more importantly so is the bride, but I’m curious to know what others think. I’m interested in hearing from anyone, especially those who have experience with stuff like this. Please comment with constructive criticism, likes, dislikes, tips of the trade, and anything relevant (or unrelevant) that comes to mind.
