The Tuba Dance

tubaboydog

I was looking through some reference photos I took for a different project, and I came across a photo of my cousin playing his tuba. He looked so small compared to the tuba. All you could really see were his hands and his legs. It inspired me to do a drawing of it. Then I came across a photo of his dog that just seem to fit so perfectly. I plan on adding more to the background along with some hand drawn typography coming out of the tuba.

Since I don’t have the luxury of going to school for a critique, I was hoping people would participate in a virtual critique. If you have any suggestions/feedback on what I have so far, please post it in a comment.

I know I’m partial because it’s my kid behind the tuba but I love it! I can’t wait to see more. Lupe looks good too!

You got the body of the tube quite well, but the exaggerated bell flair brings the sketch into cartoon-land. (not a bad thing if that is what you wanted to do!) Now try drawing a Sousaphone for a real challenge ;-)

I have been collecting tuba drawings and photos for many years – they are very tricky to get right!

I think it’s brilliant! You’ve captured the somewhat quirky and almost surprised expression on that little doggie’s face beautifully. I can just imagine a photo of him looking exactly like that. I can’t wait to see your end product!

Yay! I can see some definite improvement in your drawing powers! Can’t wait to see what you do with this.

Are you going to add a seat and some other ‘props’ to the scene?

Very nice! I love the brass. I wish I was there dancing to it!
